History & growth

From river crossing to one of Alberta's largest towns

The name comes from ohkotok, the Blackfoot word for rock, likely a nod to the Big Rock, a giant glacial erratic about 7 km west of town that travellers used to find the Sheep River crossing. In the 1870s and 1880s the crossing was a stop on the Macleod Trail between Fort Macleod and Fort Calgary. A sawmill, brickworks and the 1892 railway helped the community grow, and Okotoks became a village in 1899 and a town in 1904. Oil discovered to the west in 1913 made it a supply centre for decades. Today it's a fast-growing community of more than 30,000, and in 2007 it became home to the Drake Landing Solar Community.
