Cochrane began in 1881 as the Cochrane Ranche, a large cattle lease named after rancher Matthew Henry Cochrane. It became a village in 1903 and a town in 1971. Since then it has grown fast: the population nearly tripled between 2001 and 2021, from 11,798 to 32,199 people, and new communities like Greystone, Rivercrest and Southbow Landing keep adding homes.
