History & growth
From whistle stop to fast-growing city
Airdrie began in 1889 as a whistle stop beside Nose Creek on the new Calgary and Edmonton Railway, and was named after Airdrie, Scotland. It became a village in 1909, a town in 1974 and a city in 1985. Growth since then has been remarkable: the population went from 20,407 in 2001 to 74,100 in 2021 and passed 90,000 in the 2025 municipal census, with new communities like Wildflower, Key Ranch and Vantage Rise still adding homes.
