History & growth
From cabin lake to lake city
Chestermere Lake began as a natural wetland. By 1907 a dam and canal system had turned it into a reservoir for the Western Irrigation District, and cabin owners soon followed. Residents bought the land in 1975, the Summer Village of Chestermere Lake was incorporated in 1977, it became a town in 1993 and a city in 2015. Growth has been fast, from 14,824 people in 2011 to 22,163 in 2021, with large new communities still adding homes.
